Vinita Bali to head Britannia

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Nov. 2

MS Vinita Bali is the new Chief Executive Officer of the Nusli Wadia-managed Britannia Industries Ltd.

Ms Bali, a former worldwide marketing director of Coca-Cola, will succeed Mr Sunil Alagh who made a controversial exit in April 2003.

The top slot has been lying vacant since then.

However, there is no clarity on the future role of Mr Nikhil Sen, the current operational head and the Chief Operating Officer (COO), in the wake of Ms Bali's appointment.

When contacted, the Wadia family offered no comments on queries pertaining to Mr Sen. In fact, Ms Bali's entry comes at a time when speculation has been rife that Mr Sen may soon move out of the bakery major, jointly owned by Wadias and the French food major, Danone.

Mr Sen could not be contacted.

Britannia has seen a spate of exits in its top management over the last one year amidst talk that the Wadias were looking to overhaul the company's top management.

The appointment of Ms Bali to head one of the most high-profile domestic companies is seen as significant given the paucity of women leaders in the top echelons of the Indian corporate circles, the industry observers said.

Ms Bali started her career with Voltas Ltd before moving to Cadbury.
