Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 3

THE Government is to shortly come up with a comprehensive legislation for the small-scale sector.

Addressing the fifth Editors conference on social sectors issues, the Secretary, Ministry of Small Scale and Agro and Rural Industry, Mr Anupam Dasgupta, said that the draft of the legislation was in an advanced stage of being vetted.

"We hope that the draft legislation will be taken up at the earliest. In fact it could also be taken up during the forthcoming winter session of Parliament," Mr Dasgupta said.

Senior officials of the Ministry added that moves were also on to provide market development assistance (MDA) for khadi. "The MDA could come from next year or the year after. However, when it comes into effect MDA will not be available to give discounts on khadi products but for other purposes which should promote the sale of khadi products," they said.

On the issue of job loss in the industry, officials said there had been an increase in employment generation although the number of people employed by individual units may have come down over the past 12 years.
