"Winners were selected on the basis of marketing innovations, customer orientation and merchandising initiatives."

Chennai , Nov. 3

RPG Retail, which operates more than 350 stores branded as FoodWorld, MusicWorld, Health & Glow and Spencer's Hypermarket, bagged the Gold awarded by retail business magazine Retail Asia. The magazine recently unveiled in Singapore the first-ever ranking of Asia Pacific's leading retail companies.

RPG Retail, which generated sales of Rs 528.75 crore last year, also received the `Best of the Best' award in the Asia Pacific region. Four other companies from Australia, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan also received the same award.

The winners were selected on the basis of marketing innovations, customer orientation and merchandising initiatives as well as systems and processes that have been successfully deployed, says a press release from RPG. The ranking was compiled with the support from Euromonitor International, a major strategic consumer and retail research firm. KPMG, the international consultancy and audit firm, was the principal partner of this award programme.

Commenting on the two awards received, Mr Sanjiv Goenka, Vice Chairman, RPG Enterprises, said, "This is a happy moment for the nascent Indian retail industry. We feel elated that RPG Retail has been adjudged at par with retailers operating in far more developed economies with many years of organised retailing experience. We are committed to make the retail revolution a reality in India."

RPG Retail plans to double its outlets by March 2007. The projected annual sales from 600 outlets then would be Rs 2,000 crore.
