AP industries may get power at Rs 2 a unit

Hyderabad , Nov. 5

THE Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Friday hinted at offering power at Rs 2 a unit to the industrial sector.

Addressing a CII conference on `Export excellence' here, he said the Government wanted to make power available at an affordable rate as against about Rs 4 elsewhere in India with Reliance and ONGC increasing their activities in the State.

Terming the State "proactive," he hoped to achieve financial closure for Gangavaram Port in the next three months.

The Government decided to earmark 20 tmc of water from Polavaram project.

Delivering the keynote address on `Role of Government in promoting exports,' Mr G.K. Pillai, Additional Secretary (Ministry of Commerce and Industry), wanted the States to address the problems of exporters.

"The State Governments should not consider exports units only as a source of revenue. They should be viewed as facilitators for enhancing economic activity in the respective States," he said.

He asked Finance Ministers of States not to retard or kill export units in the garb of raising taxes.

Mr Pillai hoped that draft bill on special economic zones would get the Cabinet nod this month for introduction in Parliament in the upcoming session.
