Bangalore , Nov. 7

BANGALORE Central Excise expects a four per cent increase in collections to Rs 3,896 crore during the current fiscal with ITC leading the collections.

ITC's contribution is around 56 per cent of the total collections of the Bangalore zone. During the first half of the current fiscal, its contribution grew seven per cent to Rs 915 crore compared with the same period last year. During 03-04, ITC gave away Rs 1,762 crore towards Central excise.

The Bangalore Zone Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, Mr N. Krishnamurthy, told newspersons on Saturday that during the first half of this fiscal, the collection was Rs 1,860 crore.

Out of this, Rs 1,629 crore was from Central excise, which grew nine per cent compared with the same period last year and the rest was under service tax, which grew 61 per cent. The Bangalore zone has seven districts under its fold. During 03-04, the Bangalore zone collected Rs 3,362 crore towards Central excise duties and Rs 373 crore as service taxes.

He said a service tax commissionerate has been set up in the zone exclusively for administering service tax. The commissionerate has three service tax divisions. Currently, 70 services come under the service tax net including 12 new services like airport services, outdoor catering and business exhibition services.

Mr Krishnamurthy said the Bangalore Customs generated revenues of Rs 1,934 crore in the first half of the current financial year. Mr Krishnamurthy said importers and exporters could now track customs documents online through an interactive voice response system. He said the use of electronic data interchange system has resulted in reduction of transaction costs and also the time taken by the customs for clearance of cargo.
