Kolkata , Nov. 23

THE 7th International Mining & Machinery Exhibition (IMME 2004), will be inaugurated here on November 24 by the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharya.

The four-day event will provide a common platform for exhibitors, professionals, buyers and delegations to discuss joint ventures, technology transfers and strategic B2B alliance, besides showcasing the latest products and technologies in the mining and mineral sectors.

The IMME 2004, which is being organised by Confederation of India Industry in association with the Union ministry of coal and mines and Coal India Ltd (CIL), will have 200 exhibitors from 15 countries including national pavilions from the Republic of South Africa, Australia, Canada, Germany, Poland, Russia and the UK. South Africa is the partner country at this year's exhibition, while Chhatisgarh, being the partner State, will project its strength in the mineral sector.

In addition to a number of Indian delegations and business visitors, a 32- member delegation from Australia, a 25-member delegation from South Africa, a 20-member delegation from the UK, a 25-member delegation from Germany, a 15-member delegation from Russia and an 8-member delegation from Poland have confirmed their participation in the event.

Expectations of the exhibition are high, with organisers anticipating direct business of about Rs 1,000 crore besides many joint venture agreements between Indian and overseas companies. The exhibition will also give local companies, planning to develop captive coalmines, an opportunity to learn new technologies in underground and surface mining.

CII has plans to give greater attention to the coal-mining sector, poised to grow at a steady rate in the coming years, in order to meet the country's incremental coal requirements.
