Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 2

FOLLOWING the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh's assurances to the people during his visit to Jammu & Kashmir and the North-Eastern States last month, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has made mobile services fully operational in these States with effect from Wednesday.

With this, the mobile telephone service providers of these States can now offer pre-paid mobile services.

The guidelines for the pre-paid mobile services in these States say that while the SIM cards of pre-paid mobile service would be sent to the customers by post or courier, the service to the number would be activated only after receipt of the acknowledgement slip from customers and after due verification.

However, roaming facility to the pre-paid subscriber in these States is not permitted as yet.

The Centre had banned pre-paid mobile services in Assam and the North-Eastern States with effect from February 2 this year, while the same facility in Jammu and Kashmir was not permitted even when mobile services was launched in the State.
