Corporates, PSUs pitch in to provide relief to tsunami victims

CORPORATES and public sector units are pitching in generously to provide relief to victims of the tsunami disaster.

HUDCO on Tuesday announced that it has floated a special loan scheme for rehabilitation efforts in the States affected by the devastating tsunami waves, setting aside a fund of Rs 2,000 crore for lending at a rate of 6.5 per cent. HUDCO has also contributed Rs 1 crore to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund and earmarked an additional Rs 1 crore for construction of relief shelters with disaster-resistant technologies.

Tobacco major ITC Ltd has decided to contribute Rs 3 crore to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, while automobile giant Maruti Udyog has announced a contribution of Rs 1 crore to the fund and in addition, the company's employees have pledged one day's salary to help the victims of the tragedy.

Infosys Technologies has announced a contribution of Rs 5 crore to the fund. Meanwhile, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry has raised about Rs 3.5 crore for aiding relief efforts.

Among the public sector banks, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank have decided to contribute Rs 2 crore, Rs 5 crore and Rs 2 crore respectively to the Prime Minister's Relief fund.

In addition, corporates such as Coca-Cola India and the Tata Group are organising relief measures in the tsunami-hit areas.

RPG Enterprises' FoodWorld chain of supermarkets intends organising 200 tonnes of foodgrains, rice and pulses to provide to the victims of the disaster. That apart, employees will contribute a day's salary to be donated with a matching contribution from the company.

Also, all FoodWorld stores will be used as collection centres for clothes, utensils, and whatever else people would like to contribute, said a senior executive of the company.
