Jewellery from gallstones!

Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 22

OVER the years, ornaments have been made from all sorts of materials. Precious stones, terracotta, seashells, coconut shells, plastic and a variety of metals have all been used to manufacture jewellery. But ornaments made using gallstones?

In an instance of slightly unusual jewellery design, a doctor at the Sree Uthradom Thirunal Hospital in the city has used stones taken from the gall bladder of a patient to make a set of ornaments.

According to a release issued by the hospital, the stones were removed from the gall bladder of a 32-year-old woman who was admitted to the hospital with complaints of persistent abdominal pain. Investigations revealed that the patient had mixed gallstones and that surgery to remove the gall bladder was the only option, the release adds.

S. Valsala Devi, a pathologist at the hospital and also a member of the team that operated on the patient, designed various pieces of jewellery using the 300 or so stones removed from the woman's gall bladder during the surgery.

The gallstones were of different shapes, sizes and colours, says the release.

This one-of-a-kind jewellery set is, of course, not for sale.
