I-max cinema planned on old Vizag jail premises

Visakhapatnam , Jan. 27

A WORLD-CLASS park and an i-max cinema will come up on the old Central jail premises here after a few months.

The century-old building is being demolished and the officials of Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) are confident that ground-levelling work will be completed in a week.

"We want to construct the best park in the country by seeking proposals from noted architects from New Delhi, Chandigarh and other places," the VUDA Vice-Chairman, Mr D. Vara Prasad, said here on Thursday.

Of the 28 acres of land, the VUDA would earmark six to seven acres for locating the i-max cinema, multiplex and food courts and the remaining area would be converted into a thick urban jungle with walkways, jogging tracks, fountains and greenery.

Mr Vara Prasad said they were taking care not to axe old trees. The VUDA would seek proposals (expression of interest) for taking up of work on the park and the theatre and food courts on Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis.

He said a complex consisting of six cinema halls would be developed, one of which would screen i-max movies. He said the VUDA would give top priority to providing a multi-storied parking complex keeping in view the increasing volume of traffic in the city in next 20 years.

He said each cinema hall would have a seating capacity of 200 to 250. The multiplex would have marketing outlets.

He said global tenders would be floated for selecting the companies to execute the projects.
