Hyderabad , Jan. 27 INDIAN Immunologicals Ltd (IIL), the wholly owned subsidiary of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), has entered into an agreement with Cooperative Resources International (CRI), the US-based largest cooperative breeding company, to provide advisory services aimed at improving the Indian livestock economy. The joint venture company, IndiaGen, is considered the first such venture dedicated to the service of the Indian milk producers for providing breeding and advisory services at the farmer's doorstep, according to the NDDB Chairman, Dr Amrita Patel. Unveiling the joint venture here on Thursday, she said the venture would provide on-farm consultations, sales and service offering integration of on-farm record keeping, genetic inputs and livestock marketing. It aims to provide farmers with genetics and advisory services to optimise productivity and help reduce cost of milk production. Stating that India is the largest milk producer in the world, Dr Patel, however, said it was important to increase the productivity per animal if the country has to remain competitive. According to her, the benefits of breeding programmes put in place by several States have only marginally reached the farmers, often with poor quality of service. According to the CRI President, Dr David Hileman, his company would provide technical assistance in developing and enhancing semen production capacity and semen processing capabilities, improving efficiency of progeny testing programmes, standardising and enhancing data management systems, and genetic evaluation procedures. CRI would train the senior staff of joint venture company in the US for providing professional services to Indian farmers. The Union Minister of Agriculture, Mr Sharad Pawar, said the Government was considering a proposal to establish a development board for fisheries in the lines of NDDB. Stating that the Government was committed to providing thrust to irrigation and agriculture, Mr Pawar said the Centre would soon come out with a Comprehensive Seed Act to address the incidents of spurious seeds that were leading to farmers' suicides. The Minister said IndiaGen should take lead in establishing efficient infrastructure to carry out a progeny-testing programme for important buffalo breeds, dairy cattle breeds and crossbred cattle in the country, and meet the major requirement of bulls for semen stations in the country. He also felt an immediate need to establish a systematic progeny-testing programme for `Murrah' buffaloes involving farmers in the North.
