Rise in Indian Web site defacement in Jan

`Mass defacement incidents were detected on January 2, 12 and 19'.

New Delhi , Feb. 6

AT least 798 Indian Web site defacement cases in popular domain names including .com, .gov.in, and .org were reported by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-in) in January 2005, compared to 49 in the previous month. The marked rise in number of defacement incidents was on account of mass defacement attempts witnessed during January.

As per the defacement statistics recorded by Cert-in, of the total 798 defacements in January 2005, at least 636 were in the .com domain, while 70 cases pertained to .org domain names and 62 were in the .net domain. Other defacements were spread across domains such as .gov.in, .biz, .co.in, and .edu amongst others.

In contrast the number of total defacements in December 2004 stood at a mere 49, which included 21 .com Web sites, eight defacements in .co.in and five in .ac.in domains, besides some in .gov.in and .org.in domains.

"There has been an increase in number of Web site defacements during January due to mass defacement incidents detected on January 2, 12 and 19 as these alone accounted for 699 site defacements," sources said.

Sources, however, pointed out that while Cert-in attempted to track .com Web sites also, the actual incidents of defacement in this domain could be far more than what was captured in the official statistics. "It is relatively difficult to establish that a site in `.com' domain is actually an Indian site and hence the process of gathering the information is not complete," he said.

According to the statistics, between June 1, 2004 and December 31, 2004, as many as 1,131 Indian sites were defaced, and at least 922 of these belonged to the .com domain and 53 were .org sites. Around 24 sites belonging to .gov.in domain and 48 in .co.in domain were hacked.
