Thomas K. Thomas

New Delhi , Feb. 7

INDIAN telecom companies in joint venture with the Nepalese telecom service provider, United Telecom, today announced that the international long-distance traffic from that country had been restored.

The Indian partners are now in talks with the Ministry of External Affairs to discuss ways to restore other telecom services in Nepal.

United Telecom has three Indian joint venture partners - MTNL, VSNL, and Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd (TCIL). The fourth partner is Nepal Venture Pvt Ltd.

Mr G.D. Gaiha, Chairman of United Telecom, told Business Line: "We are discussing with the Government to find ways to restore the communications links in Nepal. We have been able to restore the ILD calls today but we will have to get other services up and running as this has revenue implications for the joint venture company."

Mr Gaiha is also the Chairman and Managing Director of TCIL.

United Telecom was forced to shut down its operations in the country after the king dismissed the Government.

While VSNL and TCIL hold 26.6 per cent each in United Telecom, MTNL has 26.8 per cent stake. The Nepalese company has 20 per cent stake.

The firm is administered by the Department of Telecommunications and has a 10-year extendible licence to provide basic telephone service using wireless technology.

The company has deployed full mobility CDMA system in Kathmandu Valley and the neighbouring districts of Lalitpur and Bhaktapur. It has more than 50,000 users.

United Telecom also has a licence for international traffic and acquired a 9-m earth station from the US firm, Globecomm Systems International.
