SSI Permanent forum for SAARC small sector in Kolkata Our Bureau
Kolkata , Feb. 20 THE three-day conference of small industries of SAARC countries ended with a decision to form a permanent forum for exclusively serving their interests. The proposed forum will have its headquarters and secretariat here. This was the first conference of its kind and delegates and exhibitors from all SAARC member countries, except Maldives, participated. The conference was organised by the Federation of Associations of Cottage & Small Industries (FACSI). The conference passed several recommendations aiming at protecting the interests of small enterprises, which are feeling insecure in the era of globalisation and liberalisation. It was recommended that SAARC should move towards a Customs union by gradually eliminating tariff and non-tariff barriers and discriminating practices in the region. The point was made that the economic potential of SAARC countries lay only in small-scale industry. Co-operation among the SSI sector in these countries could involve mutual assistance for setting up infrastructure, supply of consultancy services, plant & machinery and training of personnel. The projected forum, it was felt, could be of some use in this direction. The conference asked the governments to evolve uniform policies for the development of small enterprises.
