Telecommunications Info-Tech - Mergers & Acquisitions Govt studying report on MTNL-BSNL merger Our Bureau
New Delhi , March 3 THE Government on Thursday said ICICI Securities has submitted the initial report on synergising operations of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, and the Department of Telecom (DoT) was looking into it. "We received the report...We are looking into it," the Minister of Communications and IT, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, said here. On the options for merging the two PSUs as suggested by the advisor, Mr Maran refused to comment saying a "decision will be taken soon." DoT was earlier looking at the option of setting up a holding company under which the operations of the two State-owned companies would be sygnergised. The two PSUs may become wholly owned subsidiaries of the proposed holding company by proportionately swapping MTNL's shares with that of the holding company. Mr Maran lauded the exemplary work of National Institute of Amateur Radio (NIAR), Hyderabad, in tsunami-affected areas, particularly in the Islands of Andaman and Nicobar. Mr Maran also released the Amateur Radio Acknowledgement Card (HAM Card) to be sent as a thanks-giving letter to all the 36,000 Ham operators worldwide who were in contact and were associated with tsunami relief services.
