Oilseeds & Edible Oil Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Record soyabean oil imports in February Our Bureau
Mumbai , March 16 SOYA oil imports touched a record level of two lakh tonnes in February 2005, according to the Solvent Extractors' Association (SEA). Total imports of edible oils during the month were reported at 4,20,712 tonnes, compared to 2,84,122 tonne last February. The total imports during the first four months of the current season (November 2004-February 2005) were reported at 13,67,014 tonnes, compared to 11,53,742 tonnes during the corresponding previous period, up by 19 per cent. The import ratio between soft oils and palm oils was nearly equal at 49:51. Import of refined oils was reported at 1,76,724 tonnes (13 per cent) and that of crude oils was reported at 11,90,290 tonnes (87 per cent) during the review period. Palm oil products imports have fallen to 7,74,694 tonnes from 10,29,423 tonnes (89 per cent to 57 per cent), whereas soft oils imports - mainly soybean oil (5,65,306 tonnes) - have increased to 5,92,320 tonnes from 1,24,319 tonnes (11 per cent to 43 per cent). Soyabean oil import constitutes over 40 per cent of total imports.
