Om Bioplast gets patent design trademark

THE city-based Om Bioplast Pvt Ltd has received a patent design trademark from the Intellectual Property India of the Government of India's Patent Office. Ms Shaila Nevgi, Director, Om Bioplast, told presspersons that the patent has been granted to "a process of manufacturing modified plastic raw material in the form of granules for producing a plastic film having properties of degrading or burning like paper.''

Ms Nevgi said the company now sells its product as an additive in the form of Masterbatch to assist plastic and polythene bag industry. These granules can be used along with raw material for producing an environment friendly biodegradable polythene film.

Ms Nevgi noted that the product was also tested for oral toxicity as per US standards, by the National Toxicology Centre, and had been found ideal for food packing applications as well.

The characteristics of this product are that it burns like paper without leaving significant residues, degrades completely in vermin compost depending upon loading levels and photo degradable when subjected to 200HR UV irradiation test. In sewage treatment it gets attacked and destroyed completely by fungus and algae.

Ms Nevgi said the company is also looking at exporting its products in a big way to Europe and Japan and is also receiving enquiries from countries such as Chile and Bangladesh.

"Now that we have been granted the patent, we plan to take up commercial production and export of the product in a big way,'' she added.
