THE State Government has asked the Mangalore City Corporation to submit a blueprint to construct another vented dam at Tumbe in Dakshina Kannada district to supply water to Mangalore city. The new dam is proposed at 100 metres downstream the present one, according to the Mangalore Mayor, Mr Purandaradas Kuloor.
Mr Kuloor told newspersons here on Wednesday that the proposed dam could store water for 110 days. The Corporation will keep in mind the population of 2026 while conceptualising the proposal for the new dam.
Since repairing the existing dam will need an investment of around Rs 3.5 crore, the Corporation is in favour of a new dam, he said.
The Mayor said all steps have been taken to tackle water scarcity in the city during summer. At present, water is being supplied to the city once in three days due to lack of inflow to the vented dam. However, there has been a marginal increase in the inflow with the recent rainfall in the district.
Mr Kuloor hoped that the Corporation could supply water once in two days, provided the dam records a water level of 10 ft. The present water level is nine ft.
Stating that the Corporation has made arrangements to supply water in tankers, he said 20 private tankers have been hired for this purpose.
`No water for industries': Mr Kuloor said no unit in Mangalore is getting water for industrial purpose. The Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd has been asked not to pump water from the Sarapady dam. However, some of the industrial units are being supplied with water only for drinking, he added.
