New Delhi , April 16

HELPED largely by growing exports of the Hyundai Santro, total passenger car exports jumped by 28.2 per cent in 2004-05. Total passenger car exports were at 1,60,677 units in the last fiscal against 125,320 units in the previous year.

Exports of the Hyundai Santro more than doubled in the period to 75,182 units from 35,750 units, with it becoming the largest exported car from India in the year.

The Santro Xing, which is sold as the Atos Prime in overseas markets, is being exported to Europe, Africa and Mexico among other regions.

Hyundai Motor India also exported 6,911 units of the Accent in the last fiscal, taking its total export tally in the year to 82,093 units.

Besides Hyundai, all the three other major exporters of passenger cars — Maruti Udyog, Ford India and Tata Motors — saw a dip in exports in 2004-05.

Maruti's exports, constituting primarily of its compact car Alto, dipped by about five per cent in the year to 47,646 units from 50,248 units. This was due to declining exports of the Maruti 800. The period further saw exports of Ford India dip to 22,625 units from 24,000 units, while Tata Motors exports decreased by about 8.7 per cent to 8,116 units.
