Co-operatives NCDC seeks State-level committee for co-operative development Our Bureau
New Delhi , May 23 THE National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) has called for formation of a State-level coordination committee to facilitate discussions on various issues of co-operative development, handled by different departments. The NCDC Managing Director, Mr Dinesh Rai, has proposed constitution of the committee under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary or Agricultural Production Commissioner, stated an NCDC release. At a recent summit organised to strengthen the development of co-operatives in the North-East, Mr Rai pointed out that funding for the region by the NCDC in next five years aggregates to over Rs 167 crore. It includes Sikkim with Rs 43 crore, Assam with Rs 27.85 crore, Meghalaya (Rs 15.8 crore), Mizoram (Rs 10.5 crore), Nagaland (Rs 19.6 crore), Tripura (Rs 18 crore), Manipur (Rs 16.55 crore) and Arunachal Pradesh (Rs 15.7 crore), added the statement. The meeting deliberated upon the perspective investment plans for each North-Eastern State to evolve a time-bound action plan. The NCDC has launched several employment-oriented income generating schemes in handicrafts, small-scale cottage & village industries, cane & bamboo-based craft, rural crafts, industrial products, livestock, among others. The Indian cooperative sector, with over five lakh cooperatives having membership of 236 million, is one of the largest cooperative structures in the world. For the period ended March 2005, NCDC has provided total financial assistance of Rs 8,784 crore for various cooperative development programmes in the country. For 2005-06, the corporation has tentatively earmarked an outlay of about Rs 30 crore for development of cooperatives in the North-East region.
