Chittivalasa Jute Mills under lockout

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , May 26

THE Chittivalasa Jute Mills at Tagarapuvalasa in Visakhapatnam district has been locked out following a dispute over a wage-cut. All reconciliation efforts by the Labour Department have failed so far.

The trouble was triggered by the management's unilateral decision to slash the daily wages of the badli (contract) workers from Rs 160 to Rs 85.

"They issued a circular announcing the reduction of wages for the badli workers on the night of May 4 and when the workers opposed the decision, the management declared a lockout to avoid payment of wages to 5,000 permanent, badli and special badli workers on flimsy grounds," the CITU State President, Mr Ch. Narsinga Rao, said here on Thursday.

He said that the Deputy Commissioner of Labour had convened two meetings to hammer out an amicable solution. The management did not depute its representative, he alleged.

Mr Rao, heading the recognised union, Chittivalasa Jute Mills Mechanical Workers and Workers' Union, said that despite the workers' demand, the management had not submitted the balance sheet to them.
