NMPT pitches for better rail, road infrastructure

Mangalore , June 5

THE New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has asked the Karnataka Government to strengthen the rail and road infrastructure leading to the port from hinterland areas.

Speaking at `KCCI (Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry) Export Awards 2004' in Mangalore on Saturday, the NMPT Chairman, Mr P. Tamilvanan, said that the State has an inland container depot (ICD) in Bangalore.

Most of the cargo from there is now going to other major ports. As New Mangalore is the gateway port of Karnataka, it should get container cargo from the hinterland.

He said that NMPT has contributed Rs 10 crore for the completion of a railway line between Hassan and Mangalore. He requested the Karnataka Industries Minister, Mr P.G.R. Sindhia, who was present on the occasion, to strengthen the rail and road infrastructure leading to NMP.

Last fiscal, export cargo contributed 54 per cent to the total traffic volume at the port. Stating that the port is ready to provide any facility to its users, he said NMP provided exclusive facilities to Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd to handle their respective cargoes.
