Our Bureau

Mumbai , June 16

THE Indian server market accounted for an 8.5 per cent share of the revenue market share in the Asia-Pacific region in the first quarter of 2005, as compared to 7.5 per cent market share recorded in the same quarter in 2004. This represented a 23.6 per cent growth for the quarter under review.

According to Gartner Inc, China, South Korea and Australia were the top three markets in the Asia-Pacific, accounting for more than 60 per cent of the total server revenue within the region in the first quarter.

The Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) region witnessed the strongest growth rate compared to other regions in the first quarter of 2005.

The growth, according to Gartner, was driven by the positive economic outlook for most countries in the region.

Total server-vendor revenue in the Asia-Pacific totalled $1.37 billion in the first quarter, an 8.9 per cent increase from the same period last year.

IBM (35.2 per cent), Hewlett-Packard (33 per cent) and Sun Microsystems (9.4 per cent) continued to be the market leaders, although Sun lost market share in the region. Dell followed closely behind with yearly growth of 54.6 per cent in revenue. The company did especially well in Taiwan and Malaysia, where more than 100 per cent growth was reported.

Server revenue running on the Linux platform increased just over 50 per cent compared to a year ago, with 35 per cent coming from China alone.
