Coimbatore , June 27 THE price of the green chilli has more than doubled in the last couple of weeks. The chilli, which was quoting at Rs 5 per kg a fortnight ago has risen to Rs 14 now. Trade sources attribute this sharp rise in the price levels to poor arrivals in market yards. It is learnt that the growers who adopted the precision farming technology in Dharmapuri belt are the beneficiaries of this price rise. Green chilli is cultivated in about 30 hectares in Dharmapuri belt using drip and fertigation technology. "We have been able to extend the crop period by another two months. This has helped the Tamil Nadu growers to bring chilli to the market when the arrivals from the other States like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have almost zeroed down," Dr Vadivel, Dean, Horticulture, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, told Business Line. Chilli, a five-month crop, is raised between January and May. At the commencement of the crop season, the market is flooded with arrivals from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. "The Precision Farming methodology has enabled the growers reap better yield of 22-25 tonnes per hectare as against 18 tonnes/hectare under the conventional system. The shelf life of the produce has also gone up significantly," he said. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Athiyamaan Precision Farmers' Association are proposing to start an "input supply unit" in the vicinity to check the quality of input supplies. They are also trying to establish relationship with food processing units for marketing the farm produce.
