ITC printing unit goes global with pioneering solutions

Mohan Padmanabhan

Kolkata , July 6

ITC Ltd's packaging & printing business, a major converter of paperboard into high-value packaging, has established a major international presence (in as many as 16 countries) through many pioneering packaging solutions - from concept to delivery - through its two units in Thiruvottiyur (near Chennai) and Monghyr (Bihar).

Many of the group companies of BAT, the single largest stakeholder in ITC, in places such as Uzbekistan, Poland, and France are said to be among the customers.

Speaking to Business Line recently, Mr R. Srinivasan, Member of CMC and CEO of the Printing & Packaging Division (PPD), said that this has been achieved with the support of an in-house new product team, which uses a unique process to pilot clients' packaging through its manufacturing system.

"Specifications are evolved based on clients' varied needs and corresponding to these specifications, a variety of packaging solutions are generated."

He added that the efficacy of the packaging is tested simulating the clients' factory conditions.

Mr Srinivasan attributed the achievement of world-class quality standards by ITC's paperboards business in large measure to the collaborative support lent by the packaging and printing business, as the buyer.

"This, in turn, has enabled the packaging business to establish a major presence in overseas markets."

The PPD converts over 35,000 tonnes of paper and paperboard annually into a variety of value-added packaging solutions for the food & beverage, cigarette, liquor, personal products, and IT packaging industries.
