IT Training ABT Info is a `learn while you earn' project: Promoters L.N. Revathy
Coimbatore , July 8 ABT Info, according to its promoters - the management of Dr Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology (MCET) - is not a profit-centric initiative. "The project aims at enabling the student community gain industry exposure. Besides the experience, the students also start making an extra pie, even as they pursue a course in our campus. And, the offer is not restricted to the students alone. Our alumni and other job seekers have evinced interest in this venture," Mr M. Manickam, Vice-Chairman, Sakthi Sugars, told Business Line. Though a separate business entity, ABT Info.net is located within the MCET campus at Pollachi. The promoters have invested over Rs 2 crore on this project, which provides both Web hosting solutions and BPO in the engineering services space. "Over 400 customers have sought our Web hosting solution. The response is phenomenal because the customers are able to derive the cost benefit," Mr S. Durai, Manager (Technical), told this correspondent. Within two years of inception, ABT Info is contemplating to upgrade its bandwidth. "The management is planning to enhance the bandwidth to 6 MBPS (million bits per second) from the existing 2 MBPS backbone by VSNL and an additional 512 KBPS from Dishnet. This should be through within the next fortnight," Mr Durai said. The company, which ventured into the BPO business seven months ago, has started to bag huge orders. "We are at present working on getting an operation manual ready for an MNC," he said and explained that the process involved the conversion of engineering drawing to line art as in a service manual. "In the US, the agricultural and construction equipment manufacturers are looking at getting such conversion jobs outsourced," said Mr Durai and pointed out that students with basic engineering, auto CAD and programming knowledge would be able to handle the job. ABT Info is not averse to offering the job to students on a part-time basis. Students say they are able to make between Rs 3000 and Rs 10,000 a month, depending on the time they spare for this. "There is no compulsion, but we have a screening test and only those who pass this are imparted training and allowed to take a part-time job," Mr Durai said. ABT Info, he said, proposed to tap the e-learning market potential. "Companies are prepared to give us e-learning projects for educating suppliers and customers. We are planning to take it up in the next stage," said Mr Durai.
