Kolkata , July 11

GAIL (India) Ltd has engaged an Italian firm to prepare the feasibility report on a natural gas pipeline project that is proposed to be set up between Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh and Haldia in West Bengal.

Work on the 850-km pipeline is expected to begin in 2006 and be completed by 2008, according to Mr Proshanto Banerjee, Chairman & Managing Director of GAIL.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, at the Writers' Buildings here on Monday, Mr Banerjee said the pipeline would carry natural gas from Jagdishpur to Haldia for consumption of industries in the industrial township.

This would benefit industries in the region, which could cut down on their energy costs. Between 12 and 14 million standard cubic metres of gas would be transported through the pipeline every day.

Mr Banerjee said talks would be held with the Government of Bangladesh for transportation of gas from Myanmar to India through Bangladesh.

The possibility of transportation of gas through Tripura would also be explored.

According to him, GAIL was open to the idea of supplying cooking gas to domestic households in Kolkata.

GAIL also had the capability to set up outlets that would dispense compressed natural gas, he said.
