ISRO to celebrate silver jubilee of launch of SLV-3

THE Indian Space Research Organisation is celebrating the silver jubilee of the first successful launch of India's satellite launch vehicle (SLV-3) on July 18, 1980, with a series of programmes at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre-Thiruvananthapuram (VSSC).

Announcing this at a press conference in the city on Saturday, Dr B.N. Suresh, Director, VSSC, said the President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who was the project director of SLV-3, will inaugurate the celebrations on July 28. The President is also scheduled to view the launch of a Rohini sounding rocket to commemorate the successful launch of SLV-3 and will interact with young scientists at VSSC. On the evening of July 27, Mr Kalam will meet members of the SLV-3 team and other former colleagues from VSSC, he added.

As part of the silver jubilee celebrations, VSSC is also hosting a half-day symposium on July 28. The symposium on `Launch vehicles - past, present and way ahead', will include presentations by Dr G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Mr U.R. Rao, Chairman, PRL Council, and Dr S.C. Gupta, former director VSSC. A highlight of the meeting will be presentations by two young scientists of VSSC, Dr Suresh said.

ISRO hopes to ground test an integrated version of its cryogenic engine in the next few months, he said. The organisation is also preparing for launches of its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle by the end of this year, he added.
