Workers' union protest at Kothapalli

VISAKHAPATNAM: The workers' union of Krebs Bio-chemicals Ltd, located at Kothapalli in the Kasimkota mandal of Visakhapatnam district, took out a procession here on Monday to the Collectorate and urged the District Collector to act against, "the erring management which has reneged on the promises''.
According to a press release issued by the union president, Mr G. Panda, the unit was set up at the village eight years ago, with the management promising jobs to the locals and steps to mitigate pollution. On both the fronts, the management failed to keep up the promises, the union alleged in a memorandum submitted to the Collector, Mr Pravin Prakash.
Initially, 150 locals from the villages in the vicinity were given jobs in the unit, but the wages were very low. When a union was formed in 2003 to fight the exploitation, the management had resorted to vindictive steps, the union alleged.
The minimum wages were not being paid to the workers and the management was adopting a negative attitude, the union alleged and urged the Collector to take corrective steps.
