Tuticorin traders protest ban on non-iodised salt

Our Correspondent

Madurai , July 20

THE Thoothukudi Thanpadu Uppu Ettrumathi Vyaparigal Sangam took out a rally protesting the move of the Centre to impose a ban on the sale of non-iodised salt from August 15, at Tuticorin recently.

According to the Sangam's Secretary, Mr Jeyabalan, the ban would affect the livelihood of lakhs of saltpan workers resulting in large-scale unemployment. Of the total production of salt only 40 per cent had table-use and the rest was utilised for other purposes. He said the move is unwarranted.

Further, the price differential between iodised and common salt is significant and therefore beyond the means of poor people.

There is also the need for the small-scale operators to invest in costly machineries for producing iodised salt, he said while addressing the mediapersons.
