WHO approval for 2 Matrix Lab facilities

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , July 22

MATRIX Laboratories Ltd has obtained certification for implementing Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), from the World Health Organisation (WHO), Geneva, for two of its facilities located near Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.

The manufacturing units make Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) of Anti-Retrovirals (ARVs), which help in the control of HiV infection. The GMP certification from WHO is important for the company and gives it business advantages.

It is mandatory that the APIs for ARVs have to be sourced from the WHO-approved manufacturing facilities under the projects funded by various multilateral agencies which are providing treatment for HiV/AIDS.

ARVs is one of the major areas for Matrix. It has contributed about a fourth of the revenues of the company in the financial year 2004-05, according to a company press release.

The sales of ARVs are expected to go up significantly over the coming years as more and more HiV/AIDS patients are being provided with the treatment under various sponsored projects, the release added.
