Economy Industry & Economy - Climate & Weather Bay `low' moves inland with rain belt in tow Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram , July 26 MONDAY'S well-marked low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal off the Orissa-West Bengal coast persisted, and moved inland to position itself over Orissa and its neighbourhood late on Tuesday afternoon. The system, not yet upgraded to a monsoon depression, is seen tracking a west-northwesterly direction. This is the most productive path to take in terms of the extent of rainfall it could possibly generate. Under its influence, most parts of central and north peninsular India are likely to experience enhanced rainfall activity over the next four days. MTC in next 24 hours: According to a weather update by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), the scenario will get further bolstered with the formation of a mid-tropospheric cyclonic circulation (MTC) over northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining regions of Saurashtra and Kutch in the next 24 hours. It may be recalled that earlier last month, a prevailing monsoon depression had interacted with an MTC over Gujarat to create floods in that State. The expected interaction of the `low' with the brewing MTC will only prolong the ongoing rainfall activity over north Konkan and Gujarat region. This comes on top of an already existing offshore trough stretching from Konkan to the Karnataka coast. With the revival of the monsoon materialising fully, the axis of the monsoon trough has reverted to its near normal position. On Tuesday, its axis at sea level passed through Bikaner, Jaipur, Nowgaon, Satna, the centre of the well-marked low-pressure area and further south-eastwards into the North Andaman Sea. In its forecast for the next five days, NCMRWF said the north and the northwest region would see scattered rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal during the next two days. Isolated to scattered rains may also occur over Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh during the next two to three days.
