New Delhi , Aug. 5

THE Ministry for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways has given clearance to Star Cruises, a cruise liner, to operate on the Mumbai-Lakshadweep (Kadmat Island) and Mumbai-Goa routes, an official release said. Cruise operations are expected to start by October this year, it said.

A delegation of top executives of Star Cruises, Malaysia, which has proposed to start its operation on two Indian sectors, met the Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Mr T.R. Baalu, here on Thursday and appreciated his initiatives for expeditious development of cruise shipping in the country. The delegation members also put forth a few teething problems for efficient and sustainable cruise shipping operations in India, which included the provision of priority berthing at Mumbai port and duty-free bunkering for their cruise ships. A high powered steering group under the chairmanship of Mr Baalu with Minister of State for Tourism, Ms Renuka Chowdhury as co-chairperson was set up to catalyse the growth and development of cruise shipping in India, the release added.
