Cryo Stemcell in pact with Malaysian centre for research

Bangalore , Aug. 12

STEM cell bank Cryo Stemcell Karnataka Pvt Ltd on Friday signed a knowledge and research sharing Memorandum of Understanding with StemLife of Malaysia.

Cryo Stemcell works in the area of umbilical cord blood stem cells.

It will share with StemLife its R&D and services such as growing the stem cells into specialised types, said Dr S.G.A.Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of Cryo Stemcell, and Mr Awu Tar Choon, CEO of the Malaysian biomedical player.

The tie-up, they said, would open up potential for stem cell transplant facilities across South-East Asia.

Stem cells, considered a viable alternative to transplants and to treat thalassaemia, leukaemia, stroke, spinal cord injuries and a host of therapies such as during angioplasty.

Dr Rao said, "This tie-up will strengthen our endeavour in fighting diseases that do not have a cure, like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's diseases, diabetes and myocardial infarcts (RPT infarcts)."

Stem cell banks cryogenically store the cord blood cells collected at childbirth for a fee.

The cells may be used as an alternative to transplants for the child or sibling for future requirements, they said.
