Climate & Weather Industry & Economy - Climate & Weather Rainfall tapering off in north, northwest Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram , Aug. 21 RAIN activity seems to be tapering off in the north and northwest India where only isolated wet sessions are forecast for the next 4-5 days, according to model projections by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF). Prevailing atmospheric conditions elsewhere suggest fairly widespread rainfall with isolated showers for east and central parts of the country during the period. In its weather update and forecast, the NCMRWF said that an upper air cyclonic circulation over central Uttar Pradesh persisted on Sunday and was seen extending up to 0.9 km above sea level. Another upper air cyclonic circulation located over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand the previous day had moved north-northwest to Bihar and neighbourhood. During the past 24 hours, fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls occurred over Assam and Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Haryana (including Delhi), east Uttar Pradesh, Konkan and Goa. Scattered showers also occurred over Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Maharashtra. Significant amounts of rainfall were reported from Dhubri-7.4 cm; Delhi-6.7 cm; Malda-5.8 cm; Passighat and Chandigarh-4.7 cm; Bolangir-4.1 cm and Gaya-2.5 cm. On Sunday, the axis of monsoon trough passed through Ferozepur, Ambikapur, Kanpur, Gaya, Dhanbad, Kolkata and southwards into westcentral Bay of Bengal. Fairly widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy showers has been forecast for many parts of east and central India, especially Orissa, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, east Uttar Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and the northeast regions except Arunachal Pradesh for the next 4-5 days. Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall activity is expected over Bihar, Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, Vidarbha, Karnataka, Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh. Isolated rainfall activity is expected over Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, Rayalaseema and Kerala during the next week. The ongoing rainfall in the east and central India should help improve the overall situation in the east and northeast. Meteorological sub-divisions in these regions recording deficient/scanty rainfall right from the start of the season and in respect of which statistics are available as of August 10 are (in percentage figures): Arunachal Pradesh (-22); Bihar (-23); Assam and Meghalaya (-24); Nagaland- Manipur- Mizoram- Tripura (-41) and Jharkhand (-43). The latest entrant to this category, and the lone case from the south, is Tamil Nadu where rainfall deficiency as on August 10 is - 23 per cent.
