Bangalore , Sept. 19

DIABETES care major Novo Nordisk A/S of Denmark and Aurigene Discovery Technologies Ltd of Bangalore have announced a two-year discovery collaboration in metabolic disorders.

The pact covers joint discovery on a target and pre-clinical development of a novel lead series at Aurigene.

The Bangalore company focusses on discovery of small drug molecules jointly with pharma and pharmaceutical biotech companies on a risk-sharing basis. It will also be involved in optimising some of Novo's lead series of compounds on the same target.

The agreement is extendable by a year. The announcement comes less than two months after Novo announced a manufacturing tie-up with Torrent Pharma of Ahmedabad.

Mr Sanjeev Shishoo, MD of Novo Nordisk India Pvt Ltd, said, "This agreement is part of Novo Nordisk's strategy to have a network of alliances in India, like the one with Torrent very recently. We believe we can leverage the talent and skill base available in India for mutual development and growth."

Mr C.S.N. Murthy, COO and Head, Strategic Alliances, Aurigene, said, "Aurigene will bring in further diversity to Novo Nordisk's programme.

Mr John Bondo Hansen, Vice-President, Novo Nordisk A/S, who flew from Denmark for this event, said, "India is getting increasingly noticed globally as a base for R&D and scientific capabilities. Novo Nordisk was one of the early movers to notice this change and it tied up with Dr Reddy's, CDRI and Torrent to gain from the local expertise. This agreement is the recognition of the abundant scientific talent here."
