BPO blues

This refers to the article, `CITU's initiative to establish the country's first union in the IT and BPO sector' (Business Line, October 4).

It is true that a hire-and-fire policy prevails in the IT sector, where employees have to put in long hours to meet project/support related deadlines. It is also equally true that IT companies suffer high attrition rates, with skilled employees leaving for better prospects elsewhere.

The companies therefore do their best (in their own interest) to retain talented employees.

If the latter have any grievances, they represent the same directly to the management, for which several fora are available.

In the circumstances, IT/ BPO employees certainly do not need the help of brokers and middlemen to redress their grievances. In a globally competitive industry like IT, there is no possibility of life-long employment of fixed hours, limited responsibilities, collective bargaining, automatic increments, promotions based on brute seniority/ caste, bandhs or lockouts.

The reason why India is the preferred destination for MNCs/ IT/ BPO companies is the availability of high quality manpower at reasonable cost.

Enter irresponsible trade unionism and we can expect these very companies to launch a `quit India movement' and move to a more development-friendly country, like the neighbouring China, which, though communist on paper, is pragmatic enough when it comes to `economic development and growth'.
