Kamal Nath to lead Indian team at WTO meet

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Oct. 8

THE Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, will lead the Indian delegation to Zurich and Geneva for participating in a series of World Trade Organisation (WTO) related meetings from October 10 to 12.

The Minister will first participate in the Fluela Group meeting in Zurich on October 10 and the ministerial meetings of G-20, G-33 and Five Interested Parties (FIPS) in Geneva on October 11 and 12.

The Trade Negotiations Committee meeting is on October 13 in Geneva.

An official release said the ministerial engagement at the Fluela Group, FIPS, G-20 and G-33 meetings — widely regarded as `make or break' meetings — is seen as important in view of the forthcoming WTO Ministerial in Hong Kong in December.

Apart from India, most key trade ministers representing the US, European Communities, Brazil, Japan, Canada, Australia, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Egypt and Malaysia are expected to participate in these meetings, which will assess the progress of the current Doha round of negotiations at the WTO. The WTO Director General, Mr Pascal Lamy, will also participate in these meetings.

The Fluela Group is a small group of key WTO members comprising Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, the European communities, India, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Rwanda, South Africa and the US.
