TN grain merchants want food safety Bill withdrawn

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Oct. 21

THE Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has appealed to the Centre to withdraw the Food Safety And Standards Bill 2005. It is draconian and against the interest of the trade and industry, it has said, in its executive committee meeting held recently.

The association has said that the Bill facilitated the smooth entry of multinational companies into the domestic market to the detriment of the local players who earned their bread primarily from this sector.

The rationale over the prescribed penalties on the charges of adulteration would drive away the small and medium players in the food industry that require more investment.

The Bill confers enormous powers to the enforcement officers and food inspectors.

There is a need to re-examine the Bill, it said in a statement.
