Alliances & Joint Ventures Lupin joins hands with GSK to market TB drugs in Philippines Our Bureau
Mumbai , Oct. 24 LUPIN Ltd has inked an agreement with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Philippines for the promotion of two of Lupin's tuberculosis (TB) drugs. This will be the company's third international tie-up in the last one month for marketing TB drugs. Earlier, Lupin had tie-up with Aspen Pharmacare to market its drugs in South Africa and subsequently entered into another tie-up with Ranbaxy for the West and North African market. According to the agreement with GSK,two of Lupin's fixed-drug-combinations (FDC) for TB will be marketed. One drug combines four medicines and the other combines two. The FDCs of TB drugs are based on the World Health Organization (WHO) dosing guidelines, a note from Lupin said. No details were given on the size of the agreement with GSK or the volumes that will be supplied. The significance of the Philippines market is that it ranks eighth among the 22 countries worldwide with high TB disease-burden. According to the WHO, there are more than 2.51 lakh cases in the Philippines in 2002, with an estimated incidence rate of 320 per lakh people. The arrangement seeks to leverage Lupin's intellectual property and technology in TB medication with the strong marketing infrastructure of GSK in the Philippines, the note said. Dr Kamal Sharma, Lupin's Managing Director, said the agreement helps in making TB drugs available in geographies most afflicted with the disease.
