BASF India Ltd is planning to expand the capacity of its Mangalore-based polymer dispersions manufacturing plant from 20,000 tonnes to 65,000 tonnes. The expansion will take effect from the first quarter of 2007.

"This investment is part of BASF's strategic plan to steadily strengthen the foundation of its Asian operations," said a news release quoting Mr Prasad Chandran, Chairman and Managing Director, BASF India Ltd.

Enhanced capacity will allow for increased production of acrylic and carboxylated styrene butadiene dispersions, the two polymers, which it produces at present. These polymer dispersions are widely used in the paper, paint, adhesives and construction industries.

"BASF is making this investment in response to an increasing demand for dispersions in India, and to further consolidate BASF's leadership position in this market," the release said quoting Mr Tom Witzel, Group Vice-President, Asia Pacific, BASF Functional Polymers.

The functional polymers division of BASF achieved global sales of 2.8 billion euros in 2004, with Asia accounting for 20 per cent of the total sales.
