Watch for monsoon revival on

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , Oct. 31

THE National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) has maintained its watch for the northeast monsoon to revive over Tamil Nadu and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh earliest by Thursday.

Establishment of an east-west shear zone across the extreme south peninsular India will presage the revival of the weather system, which is lying quiet for the moment. Even at this stage, it is expected to trigger light to moderate rains over the south peninsula until Wednesday.

Rainfall occurred at many places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema and at a few places in Telangana, Kerala, Lakshadweep and interior Karnataka during the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday. Isolated rainfall occurred over Tamil Nadu and coastal Karnataka.

As per the India Meteorological Department statistics, Chennai and Tiruvannamalai recorded a heavy overnight rainfall of nine cm and seven cm respectively. Other chief amounts of rainfall recorded in centimetres are: Tiruchirapalli and Cherthala (Alappuzha district) - four each; Tirukattupalli (Thanjavur district), Yercaud, Alappuzha and Kottayam - three each; Tiruchirapalli Airport, Kodaikanal, Tiruvallur, Aluva (Ernakulam district) and Kochi Airport - two each.

According to an update by NCMRWF, Sunday's feeble low-pressure area over south coastal Andhra Pradesh became less marked on Monday. But, associated upper air cyclonic circulation persisted and extended up to a height of 3.1 km above sea level.

Meanwhile, in the North of the country, a weak western disturbance passing in from across the border is seen to have impacted the weather in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on three days from Tuesday.

Under its influence, isolated snow or rains are expected in these States as well as in Uttaranchal during this period. A mainly dry weather is likely to prevail over the rest of the region.

In region-wise forecasts, NCMRWF said isolated to scattered rainfall activity is expected over Orissa, the north-eastern States, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. Isolated rains may also occur over the rest of the areas of the region except over East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar where a mainly dry weather may prevail.

A mainly dry weather is also likely to prevail in central India except over Chhattisgarh where isolated rains are expected during the next week. In the South, isolated to scattered rainfall has been forecast during the next two to three days.

As indicated already, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and south coastal Andhra Pradesh may witness a spurt in rainfall activity after Wednesday.
