Low-pressure over Bay moving west

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , Nov 4

THURSDAY'S upper air cyclonic circulation over south Bay of Bengal has intensified overnight and organised itself into a low-pressure area.

According to the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), the system is expected to move very slowly in a west-northwest direction during the coming few days.

Dr K.J. Ramesh of the NCMRWF told Business Line that the system will bring scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls at some places in Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, south coastal Andhra Pradesh, south interior Karnataka, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, the Bay Islands and Lakshadweep over the next three-four days. But he clarified that the very trajectory, as projected on Friday, would go to rule out any further intensification of the system since it will be moving largely over the comparatively cooler waters of the southern Bay of Bengal and, later, possibly southeast Arabian Sea.

Instead, a north-northwest course over the Bay would have taken it to the warmer coastal waters, helping it to whip up some heat in the process and gain in intensity.

On Friday, the system was located to the seas off Sri Lanka, and given its projected trajectory, the heavy rain bands are seen concentrating largely onto the southern parts of Tamil Nadu and the immediate west. The rest of the State as also south interior Karnataka and south coastal Andhra Pradesh will come under moderate influence of the system during the first few days.

With the system gradually moving inland, Kerala will also be brought under its footprint. The outer rain bands are tipped to reach coastal and south interior Karnataka in the north and the Lakshadweep Islands off the southwest coast.

In its update, the NCMRWF said Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, south interior and coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Orissa, Haryana and Delhi recorded scattered to moderate rainfall during the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Friday.

Significant rainfall amounts recorded in the south are (in cm): Senkottai - six; Rajapalayam - four; Chennai Airport, Tenkasi, Sivagiri and Alappuzha - three each. The upper air cyclonic circulation over north Tamil Nadu and adjoining regions had weakened further and lay over coastal Karnataka on Friday.

A counterpart circulation over North Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood also had weakened. The isolated to scattered rainfall activity is tipped to continue over Orissa and the Northeastern States for two days.

The upper air cyclonic circulation over Punjab and neighbourhood persisted and is seen moving northeast before weakening in the next two days. This is expected to give isolated to scattered rain/snow over Haryana, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal. Night temperatures are likely to fall with the passage of the system.
