Govt plans sting operations against female foeticide

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 6

THE Government has proposed setting up surveillance cells and conducting sting operations all over the country, in a bid to check female foeticide, according to an official statement.

The amended Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act now has enough stringent provisions to prohibit the perpetration of the crime with imprisonment and fine.

Yet the violators take advantage of the legal loophole, which allows pre-natal scans to monitor foetal growth and check for any abnormalities. While doing so, they come to know the sex of the child and in connivance with the parents, commit foeticide for pecuniary considerations, said the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, here today, at a run to "save the girl child", organised by the World Council of Arya Samaj.

The Minister also said the surveillance cells will have as consultants senior retired police, legal and medical experts. They will also help the States in conducting sting operations to nab the culprits.
