THE Union Government is seriously examining a proposal to set up a new Drug Regulatory Agency equipped with multi-dimensional skill sets, the Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Mr Deepak Gupta, announced here.
The new Drug Regulatory Agency seeks to ensure that medicinal products are of acceptable quality, safety and efficacy and are manufactured and distributed in ways that retain their quality until they reach the patients and consumers, Mr Gupta said.
"The Government has the obligation to ensure that unsafe drugs are kept away from the consumers and newer drugs are allowed to be marketed," he said. Mr Gupta was addressing a two-day international conference on pharmaceuticals and health organised jointly by the Union Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil) here on Thursday.
"We are also implementing a World Bank-assisted Capacity Building Project in this area, the first of its kind in the world," Mr Gupta said.
