SEZ model can be replicated in higher education: Nasscom

THE National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) has advocated an initiative for replicating the SEZ (special economic zone) model in the higher education system.
In an interactive session with media representatives, the Nasscom President, Mr Kiran Karnik, expressed the need for trying out this proposal on a pilot basis.
"We should try this out in different parts of the country, but tread with caution. There can be some pitfalls. But it is worth a try," he said.
His observation is based on the infrastructural facilities provided by large business houses in promoting engineering institutions.
Emphasising the need for more investment on education, from primary to higher education, Mr Karnik said: "the need is so large that we need to look for private investments.''
He noted that the private educational institutions were being artificially restrained and the professional education system "totally" neglected in the country.
"Innovation is the key to moving forward," he said, adding that Nasscom used the Faculty Development Workshop platform in signalling to the institutes to ensure that the faculty is abreast of industry needs, help students understand better, initiate industry-institute linkage and better weightage for people doing research.

Mr Karnik said the knowledge sector was poised to take off, but the country would need to invest more on education. The challenge was in getting quality manpower to meet the needs of the IT sector, he added.
