THE Cabinet gave its nod to undertake the next stage of the Geo-Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) project that entails sending seven communication satellites into the orbit.
At an estimated cost of Rs 1,325 crore this GSLV project would meet the requirement of various application satellites in areas such as communication, meteorology, education and health.
The first operational flight of GSLV was taken in September last year to place the EDUSAT, an exclusive satellite for the education sector, successfully in orbit. About Rs 311 crore would be spent to buy components for GSLV from abroad.
The Cabinet also approved the introduction of a Bill to repeal the Drugs (Control) Act 1950.
While drugs fall under the ambit of the Essential Commodities Act 1955, prices are fixed or revised under the provisions of Drugs (Price Control) Order issued under Section 3 of the Act.
It also gave its nod for repealing of the Spirituous Preparations (Inter-State Trade and Commerce) Control Act, 1955. A Bill repealing the Act will be introduced shortly.
Another Bill repealing the Union Duties of Excise (Electricity) Distribution Act, 1980 has been cleared by the Cabinet.
