Foreign Trade Netherlands invites IISc to explore industrial research tie-ups Our Bureau

Bangalore , Jan. 18 FOR the second time this week, Bangalore found itself playing portal to yet another VVIP visit — this one from the Netherlands Prime Minister. Dr Jan Peter Balkenende, who arrived from Amsterdam on Tuesday evening close on the heels of his Ireland counterpart, chose to start his five-day itinerary with a visit to Infosys Technologies campus on Wednesday. The Prime Minister, who is also Chairman of the Innovation Platform of the Netherlands, is due to visit the Dutch multinational Philips' new Innovation Campus in Bangalore on Thursday. At the Indian Institute of Science, Dr Balkenende made a special lecture on `The age of India - innovation and sustainable development'. The IISc's industry interface, the Society for Innovation and Development (SID), made a presentation on its domestic and international industrial partnerships and its association with Philips. The visiting Prime Minister invited IISc to explore industrial research partnerships with Dutch companies, as in the automobile and alternative energy programmes. The scientific adviser to the visiting Prime Minister is slated to hold further talks with the SID and the institute's International Cell on Thursday to work out a way forward, the SID Chairman, Prof S. Mohan, told Business Line. An IISc spokeswoman said more academic and industrial relations such as faculty and student exchange programmes could also be expected. The Netherlands is the fourth largest foreign investor in India. The latest available figure for bilateral trade is an estimated $2 billion.
