Coimbatore , Feb 7

THE Coimbatore-based textile machinery manufacturing major Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd (LMW) is among the 12 companies that received the National Award for `Excellence in Water Management' for the year 2005.

The Confederation of Indian Industry, which had organised this national event had short listed 26 major industries for sharing their experience before identifying 12 companies for the award.

According to the Chief Financial Officer of LMW, Mr R. Rajendran, the company was able to reduce water consumption by 105 per cent between 2001 and 2005, while enhancing its production level by 39 per cent.

Explaining the methodology, he said various water conservation measures such as rainwater harvesting, reverse osmosis plant for effluent treatment, water recycle and re-use, re-use of chrome scrubber condensate for electroplating and domestic water conservation measures had helped the company achieve this landmark.

"We have identified and executed 14 different projects. Notable among these is the reverse osmosis plant for effluent re-cycling for electroplating process. The main mantra however is the three R's - Reduce, Recycle and Re-use," he said.
