In what ways can women contribute to Vision 2020 for India? This is the question that a line-up of achievers will try to answer at the annual women managers' convention organised by the Madras Management Association (MMA). This convention will be held on March 8 and will be the sixth in the series.
The theme for the convention has been inspired by the vision of the President , Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who said that India could attain a higher GDP growth of 7 to 8 per cent annually to become the third largest economy after the US and China, if reforms are pursued more aggressively.
He said India would become the fastest growing economy out of the 34 developed and emerging markets and the world's third largest economy, trailing the US and China, by 2020.
This juxtaposed with Alvin Toffler's quote on the subject, "We are now shifting away from an economy based on muscle power to one based on mind power, and that eliminates a crucial disadvantage for women."
As women play increasingly larger leadership roles in the country, the MMA has invited thought leaders to do some forecasting.
Ms Anita Gupta, Chairperson, MMA Women Managers' Forum, said speakers like Ms Musharaf Hai, Chairperson and CEO, Unilever, Pakistan; Ms Rohini Rau, the young sailing champion from Tamil Nadu; and Captain Saudamini Deshmukh, the first Indian woman to become a Boeing commander, will share their visions and goals.
As a run-up to the convention, MMA also organises a competition for the `Outstanding Women Manager of the Year' award.
This year, 28 women managers are in the running for this award. The winner will be announced at the convention.
